Light A Model: Studio and Location Lighting Techniques for Fashion Photography
Professional photographers and particularly those inspired to become one will greatly benefit from Billy Pegram’s Light a Model. The author has been a professional in fashion and model photography for many years, and he is sharing his expertise and long experience to learn this highly specific niche photography. Pegram focuses on lighting the subject but he introduces it with other aspects, like the challenges and rewards you can expect as a model photographer, equipment, previsualization, and so on. He emphasizes creativity, a must to make successful model and fashion photographs. Without your creativity, your photos remain just average and may not make it to the client’s portfolio. As a photographer, you don’t work on your own but you are often part of a team including a makeup artist, hairdresser and photo stylist. He includes numerous photos as examples with brief explanation with each, e.g. various posings, but mostly of lighting your subject. Many examples illustrate the various lighting conditions and how they change the final image. The book is filled with useful technical information. In one chapter he deals specifically with nine different types of models (commercial, lingerie, plus-size, swimwear models). The final chapter, Creative Techniques, is for more advanced techniques.
