The Pharmacist of Auschwitz: The Untold Story

The Pharmacist of Auschwitz is a very hair-raising, eye-opening, breath-taking story of greed, corruption, and pain. This is a book that needs to be in the classroom. However, I do not believe it should be in just Holocaust Literature or Jewish Studies classes, but in every single English class around the world, from high schools to colleges. Words cannot even properly describe the devastation that unfolds within these pages. There are moments in the book where you feel as if you are there along with the SS officers and their prisoners. You will read about horrible experiments performed by the doctors; the callous lack of concern from the SS when it came to proper treatment of the prisoners. My stomach turned, my eyes constantly were moist from tears. I had to put this book down several times in order to catch my breath and process all the horrors I was reading. This is not an easy book to read, but the subject matter is very important. “Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it” is a very wise quote I’ve heard most of my life. With the national political atmosphere and the current world events, perhaps it would be wise to learn about the past to prevent future horrors.

Even though the story focused on one man, it also highlighted how hard it was to prosecute those involved with the Final Solution and how little punishment was given to many of these people.
