Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Shatter Your Senses!
This book is the latest of Ripley’s Believe It or Not!’s annual series, which it has been publishing for over a decade. Like other books in this series, it is a coffee table book with several interesting facts per page and full-color pictures on high-quality glossy paper. The stories are meant to be a quick read, and the accompanying pictures enhance the text. While the content may seem whimsical, the page layout is thoughtful and clean.
The book claims that all the stories are true. If they are true (there is no reason to doubt their authenticity), they represent the most extreme or odd conditions, achievements, tastes, or occurrences. Just given the sheer number of topics covered, there are bound to be some that will appeal to every reader – regardless of age or interest. However, readers should be warned that there are some entries that are not suitable for young children or squeamish readers.
The stories in the book don’t have a theme except for the odd, bizarre, and curious. The entries are written to provide an element of fun. The bold pictures and text thus serve to draw in the reader – regardless of how gross the subject matter is. From an educational perspective, it draws readers out of their comfort zone (by presenting them with “extreme” instances), and keeps them engaged through its poignant narrative. It will be most appealing to readers who like oddities and curiosities.
Chris Hayden has been working at City Book Review since 2012, so that makes him the keeper of knowledge. He manages the office and book reviewers (all 200 of them!), which is no small feat. If you’re looking at the book reviews here, you’re seeing them because he sent the books out for review. Without him, this place would fall apart, because no one else in the office knows how to use the postage machine. Two words: job security.
