Firefly: The Gorramn Shiniest Language Guide and Dictionary in the ‘Verse
Devoted fans of the cancelled television show Firefly are sure to love this new book! The Gorramn Shiniest Dictionary and Phrasebook in the ‘Verse is exactly what it says it is: a detailed dictionary that lists words, phrases, characters, and places from the Firefly universe. It is sorted alphabetically and includes a full-page entry for each main character, along with tons of pictures and diagrams. This book covers basic (but important) words, which may or may not have the same meaning in our world, and it delves into the importance of language in general in Firefly, such as how language differs between Core and Border planets and how language has changed over time. In addition, fans will love the multi-page interview with the show’s Chinese translator, which is followed by a complete list of every Chinese word and phrase that appeared on the show, along with its translation.
This book is so much fun that fans will find themselves wishing it were twice as long! It’s a great addition to the library of any lover of Firefly.
Chris Hayden has been working at City Book Review since 2012, so that makes him the keeper of knowledge. He manages the office and book reviewers (all 200 of them!), which is no small feat. If you’re looking at the book reviews here, you’re seeing them because he sent the books out for review. Without him, this place would fall apart, because no one else in the office knows how to use the postage machine. Two words: job security.
