Are You Listening?

Bea and Lou have left their homes for the wide open expanses of West Texas. Even though they started alone, a chance encounter at a small store leads them both on a journey of discovery about their pasts and their future. Young Bea is running away from home where she feels powerless against the powerful. At first she struggles to find her way, seeing strangers as permanent danger and not trusting anyone. When she meets Lou, she does not trust her at first. Eventually they learn that they need each other as well as their experiences in order to come to grips with their past. Will Lou and Bea find redemption in the stray cat they find as they work to find its home in West Texas?

Following the art is fairly easy, though certain sequences are a little difficult. The dream-like quality of flashbacks and dreams are a bit difficult to follow. The story will appeal to older teen readers, especially those who are struggling to find their way or those who have suffered traumatic experiences.
