Jack is the odd duck in a family of swans. He tries to earn his father’s approval, especially on the water, but can’t quite catch the top spot at the regatta. Instead, Weatherby and her neighbor easily win. Unfortunately for Jack, Weatherby’s win earns her a spot at Boston School, where inevitably they end up on the same boat, literally.

Both are equally excited about the upcoming school trip to Hart Isle, where Weatherby hopes to discover what’s beyond the fence that her father wrote about in his journal. When the money for the trip is stolen, they are both tapped to join an elite society and prove their worth through some detective work. They know there is more than just money on the line, and that their secrets are at risk of discovery.

The author describes her book as a little bit of Inheritance Games and a little bit like One of Us Is Lying but for younger readers, and she is spot on. There’s also a little bit of Knives Out and Hercule Poirot in there too. There’s intrigue, betrayal, family secrets, racing, and so much more. This book is the whole package.
