Nikolai knows it may only be a matter of time before the demon in him takes over and war comes to Ravka, though he is doing what he can to prevent the arrival of either. Zoya wrestles with the expansive limits of her new gift while trying to save her friends, no, her family, from the coming war, which she has no doubt is on the horizon. Nina despairs of achieving any assistance from Rasmus while trying to help Hanne come to terms with her powers. Separately their individual quests seem insurmountable in stopping a war, but with the help of friends, just about anything is possible, even in the wake of loss and despair.

Changing viewpoints give readers insight into characters while providing a method for propelling the story forward as many chapters end on cliffhangers. So many plots are deftly woven into a deliciously intense climax, making Bardugo a master of fantasy writing. Readers who have followed the series will be delighted with the return of beloved characters. Though slated as the final installment of the Grishaverse, there are still so many opportunities for future stories. If not, what a gloriously splendid and unexpected way to end a series!
