If you’re wondering how to approach the difficult conversation regarding racism and oppression with young children, I encourage you to start with this book. This story describes the struggles endured by Black individuals in an uplifting and inspirational manner. The powerful images shown throughout this book are depicted without using facial features or expressions; this will give children the power to interject their personal opinion of how the characters may be feeling. In addition to describing the history of abuse, the author also focuses on the current battles encountered by Black individuals. Author and illustrator, Maxine Beneba Clarke portrays the importance of Black Lives Matter rallies and protests in an age-appropriate manner.

This story focuses on the importance of demanding respect, acknowledging grief, and standing up for equality. This impactful book inspires hope by stating “fear will not destroy our joy”. This book is an excellent starting point for discussing inequality in our society for children of all racial backgrounds. While primarily written for Black children, these words can encourage individuals of all colors to fight against racial inequality and stand with proud “wonderful-strong” Black warriors.
