Welcome to Night Vale: The Buying of Lot 37
Welcome to Night Vale is sublime. It’s a podcast set in a peculiar desert town where the paranormal, the inexplicable, the sinister, and the otherworldly happens on a regular basis. The world of Night Vale has not only expanded into live shows and novels but is also collected into volumes of episode scripts like The Buying of Lot 37 the third addition to the series.
The Buying of Lot 37 is more than just a collection of transcripts from the podcast. Each episode has an introduction penned by either the creators or one of the voice actors, providing everything from insights into the episode’s themes, creation, and production to explanations of inside references, experiences from new and established cast members, and lots of other glimpses behind the scenes.
The collection concludes with the script for their first touring show, “The Librarian,” which allows readers who missed the tour to enjoy another curious permutation of the series.
Encapsulating everything that makes Welcome to Night Vale great, this collection is hilarious, revealing, and a terrific read, offering a completely different way of experiencing the show. Established fans and newbies alike will find plenty to enjoy here.
After editing at City Book Review for a few years, I took up the duties of editorial assistant, which include assigning books for review, posting reviews to our various sites, and nagging reviewers for things. In my non-nagging time, I’m a gamer, artist, writer, and notorious black thumb/bane of plants. My answer to every book-related question: read Octavia Butler.
