Unpredictable Magic

Unpredictable Magic is a new dark urban fantasy from best-selling author Faith Hunter. Vampires, witches, demons, shapeshifters, and other paranormals fill the pages of this urban fantasy, where the main characters, Angelina Everhart-Trueblood and her brother Evan, run Everhart Investigations, a private investigation agency. This isn’t the first time Hunter has written about these characters. This new series takes place in the same universe as her Jane Yellowrock series. Full disclosure: I haven’t read any of Hunter’s previous work, but //Unpredictable Magic// has convinced me to explore her other novels. Even without knowing the first series, I was fully invested in this new book and its characters.

Hunter starts the novel out with a bang: a kidnapping and a kick-ass parking lot brawl within the first ten pages, and the excitement never lets up. Unpredictable Magic is a dark urban fantasy that follows many of the world-building conventions that other authors have used: paranormal and magical characters operating within a system of the author’s own design, all while running through the streets and landmarks we already know. What makes Hunter’s work unique is that her characters are fully ingrained in this world rather than discovering it for the first time, which makes for a stronger story with a kick-ass female lead.
