Turtle in Paradise: The Graphic Novel
Adapted from Jennifer L. Holm’s bestselling novel of the same name, Turtle in Paradise follows a girl who is sent to live with her Aunt Minnie in Key West, Florida. Having never met her extended family before, Turtle is introduced to her rowdy boy cousins and their babysitting business, which is known as the Diaper Gang. Life has been tough for Turtle, but the friendships and relationships she forms when in Key West will lead to her coming out of her shell.
The book is set in the 1930s during an economic depression when most people were desperate for a job. I truly admire the children’s hustle in the story with their Diaper Gang business. The story and the characters were very lovable, even Turtle’s rude cousin Beans. I love how the characters in the story had such funny and interesting nicknames such as Turtle and Too Bad and Slow Poke. The expressive illustrations and vibrant colors are amazing. You really feel like you are in Key West. I haven’t read the original novel, but I absolutely recommend the graphic novel. Adults and children will love this heartwarming story.
