The World Ends in April
Eleanore (Elle to her friends — er, friend) is not having a great time in middle school. Her best friend since kindergarten is Mack, and Mack is talking about going to a boarding school for the blind. Londyn, who hangs with the popular kids, seems to have Elle in her bullying sight. Elle discovers there is an asteroid, a big one, headed for earth, and because her Grandpa Joe is a prepper, she has the skills to make sure not only her family survives, but also other kids who can learn from her. Even though her father tells her the asteroid theory is bunk, Elle goes ahead and starts a club to get ready for the day and spread the word. Even Londyn joins and, and she even seems to be becoming friendly. But everything quickly goes sideways.
Author Stacy McAnulty has her finger firmly on the pulse of middle schoolers and what makes them tick. The characters and their actions are absolutely believable. The dialogue is spot on for the age, and the drama that can only be found in middle school is completely authentic. This is a really fun book that kids will relate to and enjoy.
