A couple that is facing a disintegrating marriage is forced to take care of her ailing father in the deserted homes of the Hamptons in the winter. The husband, bored and jobless, focuses on a neighboring house where the lights are on timers and always go off at 11pm at night. One day feeling bored he breaks in and investigates the house, and brings his wife. They make a discovery that shakes them to their core and could affect their marriage; let alone their lives. As they try to figure out what happened in the house, and what her father has to do with it, it brings to light many long held secrets.

When you read a book like this you want it to be great, and it has all the markings of being great; kind of like Gone Girl. Instead what we get is something that is really good, but just can’t get quite over that edge. In trying to make the story move so quickly, and to keep the book short Matt Marinovich left several things unanswered, and just fell short of making a truly great modern thriller.
