Michael Moreci’s book The Throwaway tells the story of Mark Strain, a Washington lobbyist representing Verge, a powerful software company. The book begins with a spy swap where Strain is handed over to the Russians in exchange for Russian spies. Later, we learn that Mark Strain was abducted from his home. Now that Strain is in Russia, he is treated like a hero, while in America, everyone thinks he’s a traitor. Strain uses it to his advantage to escape, go back to America, and clear his name. Meanwhile, back in the US, Mark Strain is deemed a traitor, and a bounty is put on his head. As a result, an assassin is dispatched by the government to make sure Strain doesn’t talk. Now Strain must do whatever he can in order to save himself and his family back in America.

Michael Moreci is a comic book writer. Using his craft, he delivers a powerful, albeit somewhat unbelievable, story. The characters are very well-developed and multidimensional. His prose is very descriptive, which puts the reader in the center of the action. Likewise, the plot is very taut and suspenseful and leaves the reader gasping until the very last page.
