Bettina Vasilis has grown up in a strict household, which she has been secretly rebelling against for the past few years. At sixteen, she attracts the attention of Brady Cullen, the school’s basketball star, and her father surprisingly agrees to let her date him. Brady starts off sweet and considerate, but over the summer he changes and starts treating her badly, and Bettina is not sure what to do about it. Then she meets the man she calls Cowboy, owner of a nearby auto shop, who is truly gentle and kind, and drawn towards Bettina despite being older than her. As the two slowly fall for each other, Brady’s behavior continues to get worse. And then tragedy strikes.

The Things You Kiss Goodbye explores several ideas very relevant to young adult readers, including abusive relationships and dating someone who is more than just a year or two older than you. This story will draw readers in slowly and sweetly, and you will be praying for Bettina to find the strength to leave Brady even as you cheer for her and her Cowboy. Be prepared for some tears toward the end, but know that this novel ends on an uplifting note.
