Do you remember where you were when the infamous OJ Simpson “freeway chase” occurred? This novel opens as the three Lockhart women––Brenda and her daughters Allison and Peggy––observe OJ pass by, and their responses give you hints as to their characters. Throughout the book, Brenda (magnetic, selfish, overly opinionated, and overwhelming) is glued to the trial while her marriage falls apart and her teenaged daughters stumble along their own, crooked, paths. “Good girl” Peggy relinquishes her dream of going away to college in order to take a job at the post office, while Allison cuts class, shoplifts, and does whatever her surfer boyfriend demands of her.

All three Lockhart women are terrible at choosing men and suffer the consequences of their disastrous relationships until they finally stop keeping secrets from each other and find renewed strength both as individuals and as a family. This is a gripping, sometimes funny, novel that will keep you turning the pages.
