Set in Rome in 268 AD, this historical fictional tale follows the life of Valentinus Romanus, better known to us today as Saint Valentine. As a Roman soldier at the age of twenty-six, he is fighting with his band of brothers when he makes a name for himself by saving the Empress. But his fortunes take a turn for the worse when he falls foul of the new Emperor Claudius.

Claudius is opposed to followers of Christianity, who he feels are undermining the traditional culture and foundations of the mighty Roman Empire. Valentine only discovers and converts to this new religion once injured and forced to flee the army, becoming an outlaw of the empire. While recovering with Christian healers, he dreams of being reunited with his true love, Agatha.

He met Agatha as a young boy while playing in the forest near his home, but lost touch with her only to reunite with her years later. But will he be able to find his way back to Rome without encountering the wrath of a ruthless Emperor? And will Agatha be waiting for him or has she found another suitor in his absence? Only time and the help of his loyal followers will tell if he can make it back in time to save his dreams of love and freedom.

Mr. Collins has written a riveting, page-turning story about an elusive historical figure we celebrate every February the fourteenth. In his cinematic account, we get a fascinating look at how he might have lived and loved in Ancient Rome. I loved how he was able to blend the love story and romantic nature of his characters with the political machinations and actions of empire-building going on at the same time. It made the story come alive for me.

The author has a keen eye for detail regarding the daily life of Romans and the societal and political changes of the time. He had a way of making me feel I was right in the center of the action. The characters were well developed and the overall story was very well written.

It was a pleasure to read this book and I think anyone interested in ancient history, legends, or Roman culture will not be disappointed with this story. Honestly, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this marvelous story will be made into a movie at some point in the future.
