The Last Gifts of the Universe: A Novel
Scout and his brother Kieran are Archivists. Along with their cat, Pumpkin, they fly to dead planets, searching for and cataloging the last gifts these worlds offer. They are most interested in the technology and cultural rituals of long-dead civilizations. While investigating one such planet, the brothers unearth a message from an alien. This message foretold the ending of the world thousands of years ago. Now, the brothers and their cat are in a race to save what matters most.
The Last Gifts of the Universe by Riley August is their debut novel. The best way to categorize this book would be cozy space opera. The story is emotional, inspiring, and reflective. It is also humorous, dramatic, and intense at times. The story is helped along by the two brothers and their “sometimes-fearless space-faring cat.”
This is not the first story about space archaeology and exploring dead planets. It is an exciting storyline, and August’s novel has a fascinating plot. Still, the writing seems a bit awkward at times, and the story ends a bit quickly. But readers looking for a quick cozy sci-fi read will find hope in The Last Gifts of the Universe.
