The Eyes Are the Best Part
The job of a cover is to grab your sight and keep it there until you decide to turn it and discover what is within its pages. Monika Kim’s debut novel does just that with a great title, The Eyes Are the Best Part, and a truly great cover displaying bloody metal chopsticks with a detailed eyeball artfully skewered on one. If that cover doesn’t grab you, I don’t know what will.
Ji-Won thought her life was going pretty well and she’s even enjoying college, although her younger sister can get exceedingly annoying at times. And then everything is turned upside down when her beloved Appa cheats on her mother with another woman and decides to leave the family. Umma is destroyed and inconsolable, and then shockingly finds a new boyfriend in George, who’s awkwardly racist and overly touchy with Ji-Won. Also, she’s started having some very strange dreams about eyes, lots and lots and lots of eyes. She also has a growing hunger that needs to be satiated.
The book begins with promise and interesting characters, but unfortunately takes over a hundred pages to really get started and risks losing the reader before things begin to heat up.
