Goethe, as he is known as, was one of the most prolific and well-known Germanic writer of the late 18th Century. Generally when people think of Goethe and his work, they think of his most famous work ever Faust, where a man makes a deal with the Devil, and then regrets it at the end; of the greatest morality plays ever written. This one volume collections brings us snippets of Goethe’s large oeuvre writings. It starts off with a selection of his poetry, and then goes into some of his plays, and then finishes off with a wide variety of essays, and pamphlets that he wrote over the years. It will help redefine him to modern English readers. Goethe was more than a writer of very dramatic plays, but what we would call a polymath, someone who wrote across many different topics. And Goethe was one of the greatest, and one of the few who are still read in classrooms today in America. This one volume brings together all the sides of this talented writer. While it does not publish everything he wrote, it does give us a particular insight to the man behind the words.
