The Earth Avails

This small collection of poems with a flowery cover is a powerhouse packed with images and ideas and prayers and blessings and questions to prod quiet minds into racing and uncomfortable thoughtfulness. Each poem, whether focused on a mangy coyote or an injured, hooked sand shark or an ancient cemetery near a dying horse or a raging thunderstorm, speaks to some experience in each of us, evoking some memory hidden away in the dustiest cabinets of our minds. How does the poet know what we have known or feel what we have felt and is able to bring it out of those dark corners? He speaks to the human condition, that which is universal, while prodding those hidden emotions we thought we had tucked carefully away in a place no one would bother.

Mark Wunderlich has a way with words. His poetry is profound and pure, while seeming completely effortless. There is no pretention here as is often found in such collections of poetry, filled with grandiloquence. Anyone who loves beautiful writing will want to sop up every word and phrase in this lovely, little book.
