The Collective: A Novel
Five years after her daughter’s death, Camille is struggling with her grief and the fact that the man responsible has not been punished. After confronting him at an awards ceremony, Camille is approached by a woman to join a group. This group is not your average support group, however, as it is only for women who’ve lost a child and seek to exact revenge on those they believe have escaped just punishment. The Collective sends Camille and others to do different tasks, which all culminate in someone dying. At first, it seems to only be those who deserve it, but Camille begins to question the deaths and puts her own life at risk to find out more.
This is an incredibly dark book. If you are unclear about the devastating power that dwelling on hate and revenge can have, then read this book. It doesn’t end well and maybe that’s the point, but it was a rough read for me. I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose a child and I hope I never have to, but I also hope my life isn’t filled with as much hate as these women. No one came out better in the end.
