The Clinic: A Thriller

The Clinic was supposed to be an easy job. Eddie, Darren, and Malcolm are three teenage boys basically on their own. They rob to survive. Then Eddie brings up this rehab clinic he’s heard about, and the three of them decide this will be the big score they need. When they get there, though, they find death and carnage. This is most definitely not a rehab facility for the rich and famous. This is something a lot worse, and they might have to become what they fear just to escape.

Very interesting plot. This book should really be classified as horror, especially as it takes place in a mental facility, a classic horror venue. The swearing is atrocious, but probably realistic for teenage boys. There is also a lot of graphic violence. I definitely haven’t read a story like this before. It’s not a bad read. It goes by fairly quickly; I read it in about two hours. There isn’t a ton of substance, but it does keep you reading to figure out what in the world is going on in this crazy place. If you like scary stories and if psychiatric facilities freak you out as much as me, then I think you might like this novel. Just be warned about the language and the gore.

Malcolm was probably my favorite character in this book. He was wise beyond his years, forced to grow up when parents abandoned him. I can’t imagine what life is like for these kids who feel like they have no other options but to steal just to survive when they have no parents around or the ones they have are too high or drunk to take care of them. What they go through in this book makes it even worse. But sometimes even horror stories can have a happy ending, or at least a not-everybody-dies sort of ending.
