Stewie BOOM! Starts School
Stewie Boomstein is all set for his first day at school, but apprehension takes its toll. He arrives to school, completely out of his comfort zone, unsure of what will happen next. Assured by his parents that he will make art, ride a bike and sing, Stewie discovers that each classroom activity makes him nervous. He doesn’t know what to expect. Once at school, Stewie feels sad and then mad. The teacher tells him what to do and when, the activities occur when he’s not in the mood, and as the day unfolds, little Stewie begins to act out– badly.
The teacher calls his parents. He’s given time out.
Ultimately, he goes to bed, but wakes later in the night with a sure fire plan for how to handle the next school day. With the help of his family, Stewie takes a new and different approach, which leads to his ultimate success.
Filled with colorful details and pictures of diverse people from the world inside school, the book paints a sunny picture of the many possibilities of the average school day.
Adding to the beauty of the story is a useful section at the back of the book: Stewie’s Mom Interviews the Experts – How to Prepare You and Your Child for School. Suggestions include ideas such as practicing for the school day in advance, setting up play dates with fellow classmates before the first day arrives, temperamental expectations for children, and advice on how to handle what may be a difficult.
The author indicates that one of her children was “… born with an above average disregard for authority.” This humorous description helps the parent take a light-hearted approach to helping children with success in school. The book is an excellent resource- well thought out and well written.
