In the same spirit as Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, Slouch Witch introduces Ivy, a witch expelled from the Order who drives a taxi by day and binges television by night. She has a talking cat that demands to be fed and a best friend who loves karaoke. When her over-enthusiastic witchy neighbor goes out of town for a few days, a case of mistaken identity binds her to as an intern to a powerful second-level witch, Raphael Winter, who just happens to be gorgeous but irascible. Their investigation into valuable arcana forces Ivy and Winter to tolerate each other in order to solve a murder and find the most powerful guide to spell-casting. Along the way, Winter finds Ivy not as lazy as she appears, and Ivy discovers that not all of the Order’s members are selfish zealots.

If you can ignore a few grammatical errors, this first book in the Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic is light-hearted, fun reading. Ivy is smart and likable, even if she is a bit danger-prone.
Slouch Witch is perfect if you liked Chloe Neil’s Chicagoland Vampires and Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville.
