Say This, Not That: A Foolproof Guide to Effective Interpersonal Communication
It is incredible how easily it is to fail at communication. We might say one thing, mean another, or have our words taken the wrong way, but for the most part we have control over how we communicate and Carl Alasko, author of Say This Not That: A Foolproof Guide To Effective Interpersonal Communication, has put together a fundamental guideline easy enough for a child to use. He covers topics on dating, long-term relationships, parenting, friendships, workplace, and the everyday all in layman’s terms and breaks it down into simple processing categories. The best advice I think he provides is to simply not say more than what is needed to get your thought across and keep it simple. When we tend to continue with the thought, it often leads to embellishments, awkward moments, offense, and just unsolicited information. It is about not letting emotion drive what comes from our mouths, but to take others and the situation into consideration. While a quick read, this book offered some invaluable tools for interaction.
