Rob Delaney: Mother. Wife. Sister. Human. Warrior. Falcon. Yardstick. Turban. Cabbage.
I’m a tough sell when it comes to comedy books. Whether fiction or nonfiction, if a book is said to be funny and I don’t laugh within the first few pages, I instantly sour on the title. Thankfully, Rob Delaney’s debut offering has no such issues.
This collection of anecdotes and stories from his life, interspersed with barrages of his most popular tweets, is legitimately laugh-out-loud funny. And while it’s as hilarious and irreverent as you’d expect from one of Twitter’s premiere practitioners of 140-character comedy, there’s more here than wisecracks and wit. Delaney presents himself and his life with unflinching honesty, exploring his issues with alcohol, depression, relationships, and fatherhood with equal doses of sincerity and humor. But unlike many comics, Delaney also comes off as profoundly grateful to be writing from a better place, having survived harder times and come out the other side. While he’s by no means preaching like the converted, it’s a welcome change to see someone still be really funny without being abjectly miserable.
He’s set the bar high with Mother. Wife. Sister. Human. Warrior. Falcon. Yardstick. Turban. Cabbage., and I’m definitely looking forward to whatever he writes next.
