Quarry’s Climax by Max Allan Collins finds Quarry protecting a raunchy mogul in 1975 Memphis. Max Climer has made a name for himself as the head of a burgeoning empire fueled by an all-hours strip club, raunchy magazine, and soon-to-be porn-video business. As you might imagine, he’s made quite a few enemies–one of whom wants him dead. Enter Quarry the Vietnam vet turned hitman. Only Quarry isn’t there to kill Max but to stop the assassins, find out who paid the contract, and remove them as well.

Like the previous 13 books in the series, Quarry’s Climax reads quick but is filled with violence, witty dialogue, sex, and a steady stream of humor. Like the dirty magazines Climer puts out, Quarry’s adventures ensnare readers–in this case with the promise of a determined man killing people he’s hired to kill. Thankfully, the humor and dialogue elevate the story from being just a trashy novel. It’s fast paced and fun. After 13 books, it’s still a joy to catch up with Quarry and lose yourself for a few hours.
