Promise Me Something
Reyna has just started high school, and she is stuck far away from her friends in a new school with new people. Desperate for a friend, she kind of stumbles into a friendship with Olive, an odd girl who has no qualms with speaking her mind about everything. As Reyna’s other friends drift away, she finds herself becoming closer with Olive… until she learns Olive’s secret and is no longer sure what to think. Reyna struggles to determine what really matters to her in life before it’s too late to repair her friendship with Olive.
Promise Me Something tackles a topic that is more and more on people’s minds these days: homosexuality, homophobia, and how “coming out” can affect relationships. Reyna is relatable because she is such a typical teenager, desperate for friends, desperate to fit in. Olive is an interesting character, the kind of person we all wish we could be, steadfast in her opinions and willing to risk alienating people through true honesty. Teenagers will be absorbed by this story, eagerly reading through to find out what happens to Reyna and Olive.
