Kelly Yang’s latest young adult book, Private Label, introduces us to the teen romance between Serene Li and Lian Chen. They are an unlikely pair, ase Serene is a wealthy and popular student, while Lian is a new social outcast who doesn’t fit into the Sienna Beach mold. But being the only two Asian students in school, they eventually connect in a fake Chinese Club. But lies, secrets, and Serene’s jock boyfriend could derail their budding romance.
I am a huge Kelly Yang fan, and as with all her stories, this one is inspired by her own life. Told from the points of view of Serene and Lian, Private Label does not disappoint in its story filled with sexy romance, school drama, and teen pressures. Lian is the perfect swoon-worthy boyfriend. He is so sweet and caring to Serene—he is the ultimate high school boyfriend! Be sure to check out Yang’s debut novel, Parachutes, as well, which is told in a similar format and style.
I highly recommend Private Label to young adult readers who love a good story about love, family, belonging, and pursuing your dreams.
