Penny Dreadful Volume 1: Oversized Art Edition
Based on the TV series, Penny Dreadful: The Awaking is an artist’s edition with stunning artwork in black, white, and red. Set months after Vanessa’s death, Ethan and Sir Malcolm stumble their way into more danger. As an enemy rises from the dead, a battle begins to brew as Ethan’s heart is sought after and the upcoming battle could cost them everything. Included with the edition is history about the development of Penny Dreadful and a covers gallery for other issues.
Although ideal for those who enjoyed the TV series, Penny Dreadful is open to anyone who enjoys supernatural tales of woe and danger. The artwork is stunning with vivid black and white images full of detail. The artwork matches the tone of the television series with a gritty style and a darkness that gives it an ominous edge. Touches of red are included throughout which are eye-catching and add to the violent moments, bringing out the supernatural allure seen in the TV series. Keen attention to detail is given to every page as are appreciative touches, especially the hieroglyphics used in the Egyptian settings. The story weaves a lovely Egypt setting into the world helping to set the tone as the story is visually brought to life. This Penny Dreadful edition is everything beloved about the TV series with danger, battle, engaging characters, supernatural beings, loss, and romance.
Chris Hayden has been working at City Book Review since 2012, so that makes him the keeper of knowledge. He manages the office and book reviewers (all 200 of them!), which is no small feat. If you’re looking at the book reviews here, you’re seeing them because he sent the books out for review. Without him, this place would fall apart, because no one else in the office knows how to use the postage machine. Two words: job security.
