Overwatch Anthology: Expanded Edition
The Overwatch franchise began as a video game with its release in 2016. The Overwatch comics, which are compiled in this anthology, published by Dark Horse Comics give more depth and charm to characters beloved by a legion of fans. The characters featured in this anthology each have diverse lore and varying (and oftentimes, conflicting) world views which make for an eclectic cast. This collection is friendly, and arguably the best entry point into the franchise for gamers and non-gamers. Each chapter focuses on a single (max two) character at a time. The plot of each storyline aligns with their well-known personalities, such as Reinhardt’s silly yet bold nature and Tracer’s quirky yet devoted nature. The art, while it varies, stays true to the characters’ primary design in the game. It does leave a few questions for veterans of the franchise, such as wondering the reason why this anthology keeps Cole Cassidy’s former name, McCree, despite the character’s name change in late 2021. Additionally, some characters featured in a story, Brigitte to name one example, however, don’t have their own comic spotlight. Regardless, this is a heartwarming collection perfect to get any reader excited about reading (and playing) Overwatch.
