Objects of Desire: Stories
The author is a good writer who describes scenes from the New York lifestyle of a woman under thirty. The stories are similar to those this reader has perused many times before, however. Nothing really stands out, as the drama and the incidents are only those of importance to the very young and inexperienced. The title story details the live-in couple’s relationship, which is overshadowed by a past lover who has ascended the political heights. Like many of these stories, the characters seemingly move on at the end, but readers are left in the middle without resolution or conflict. The sameness of the stories is not enough for them to become totally uninteresting, although this reader would hope for more.
It is an accomplishment to pen and collect eleven stories, and the stories in this collection are readable, crafted by an able writer, but lacking the substance that would make them stand out from the current glut of go-nowhere, everyday stories. Greater life experience may extend this author’s repertoire.
