This book is beautiful. Seventy-three women tell seventy-three stories about transitions in their lives, transitions that are common to the human experience, but uniquely, personally, intimately told. After finishing the last story, I felt like I had returned from an intense, spiritual women’s retreat, deepening my bonds with a vast sisterhood. These women are strong, and I felt stronger and more connected after reading their stories. Some experiences I have shared, some I know I will eventually share, some I hope never to have to; but the extremely personal nature of each made me feel I could relate to the emotion – pain, searching, growth, joy – in a way a more general essay never could. These women were sharing themselves, sharing their own stories; not to dispense wisdom, or give advice, or with any thought of changing or influencing the reader at all, but just to share their own soul. It left me with a powerful sense of connection to each, and to all women, who all have such transitions in their lives, as I felt that I was a part of a great community of women who loved, hurt, struggled, overcame; that I am not alone.

As the introduction reminds us, we are all constantly transitioning. Transitioning is the inner development that happens to adjust to changes in our lives, and we are always either at the beginning, ending, or uncertain in-between period as we are growing into our new self. The book is broadly divided into six categories of types of transitions we face: ‘Moving On, Letting Go’; ‘Growing Pains’; ‘What Doesn’t Kill You’; ‘Sex and Marriage’; ‘Life, Death, Religion, and Spirituality’; ‘Power and Independence’. There are stories of aging, divorce, abuse; eating disorders and addictions; vice and grace; mothering, daughtering, sistering; friendship, frustration, children and compassion; death, birth, hope, disappointment; understanding, redemption, joy. Each section ends with a beautiful artwork, with an explanation by the artist. This wonderful set of stories will remain with you long after you’ve finished the last one.
