It is a tough time for homicide detective Will Stellar. He is still dealing with the effects of being responsible for putting his own brother in prison when he is called to a murder scene, only to discover the victim is a childhood friend. They hadn’t been close friends. In fact, Will hadn’t thought of her in years, and somehow that haunts him and leaves him guilt-ridden. In the small town of Lake City, Nevada, Will feels he should have kept track of Candace Carrick. Now her maggot-riddled body lay at his feet. Will soon has a good idea of who is responsible, but isn’t able to close the case. Someone in Lake City decides to take justice into his own hands. Bodies of people responsible for despicable acts, but not convicted, start showing up. Worse, there is a leak in the department and information on Will’s case gets to the press, a difficult problem for Will because the editor of the local paper is his long-time girlfriend, Erika. Even more problematic, the vigilante murderer, who dubs himself the Coyote, begins corresponding with Erika — correspondence which she publishes. Will starts working with an unlikely ally, the owner of a local motel and a convicted murderer out on parole. Can these two unlikely allies solve crimes that threaten to tear the town apart?

Melissa M. Garcia has written a compelling mystery chock full of interesting characters and grisly crimes. The small fictional town of Lake City is well-crafted and believable, a good container for such a busy mystery. Readers who like the genre of crime-thrillers will not be disappointed with this tightly-written and riveting story. The only caveat is as a part of a series, the ending is a bit abrupt, and some important questions are left unanswered.
