Muppets Meet the Classics: The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is not simply a classic, it is one of the cornerstones of the theater world, one of the first great tales to mix romance and horror. It is iconic. So it’s only appropriate that other icons from popular culture — the Muppets — should have a turn at bringing the Phantom’s epic story to life.
Muppets Meet the Classics: The Phantom of the Opera takes the best elements from that marvelous episode of The Muppet Show and ratchets everything up a notch, breathing new life into the story and allowing all the shameless gags and silliness to enjoy the royal treatment as if realized on the grand stage.
Naturally, humor and heart abound as the Muppets characters mix and mingle with the Phantom, the diva, the owners, and the other characters of the original, although I must confess, I found it a little jarring for the characters to make contemporary references that other characters seemed to get. After all, it’s a period piece, and there are jokes about Wikileaks.
Still, it’s great fun in the grand tradition of the Muppets. How could you resist?
