Mum, Me, and the Mulberry Tree
Early one morning, a young mother wakes her daughter. It is time for their annual trip to pick mulberries at a special mulberry tree out in the country. They get dressed and run for the bus. Mum has brought all the pails she can carry. They enjoy the ride as the bus carries them to another town, and they walk together out to a grassy field where their mulberry tree waits for them atop a hill. They spend time picking mulberries together and then enjoy a picnic until the rain begins. They run under their tree, which protects them from the rain while they finish their lunch. The bus carries them home as the day turns to evening. They bake a mulberry pie together and have some before the little girl goes to sleep.||Tanya Rosie has written a sweet story of a special day together for a mother and daughter. The writing is lovely with rhythm and rhyme and beautiful lyrical language. The illustrations by Chuck Groenink are the perfect complement to this story with plenty of details to keep youngsters engaged. The colors are soft and reflect both the time of day and the time of year.
