As children are learning to read, they are also very likely learning about time and how to tell time. Giving emerging readers books that they can easily relate to is a great idea. This book examines many different facets of time, perhaps introducing some concepts the emerging readers might not have thought about as being part of the larger idea of time, such as birthdays or bedtime rituals. The information is disseminated in short, punchy sentences using appropriate vocabulary – challenging, yet words emerging readers should be able to figure out on their own by sounding them out and by the context in which they are presented. There is also quite a bit of repetition to firmly plant the challenging words into the vocabulary of the little ones. Of course, all the text is presented surrounded by four-color photographs that suitably frame the information. The photos are kid-friendly and show a real diversity of subjects that matches the population. Kingfisher Readers has built quite a franchise of early readers at several levels. They can be depended upon to meet the reading needs of emerging readers at the level they state.
