While this book will appeal to women anxious to conceive naturally or through IVF, the subject matter should interest every female from adolescence to adults and males interested in generating progeny. In the introduction, the author explains her initiation into this subject from her experience undergoing IVF ministrations in trials to produce viable embryos for implantation in a surrogate carrier. From her background in molecular biology and genetics, she combed the internet literature for the most current research findings that would increase her chances of producing viable eggs. Because poor egg quality affects the ability to conceive, the first third of this report chronicles those factors that may compromise and those that enhance egg quality. Estrogen lowering chemicals such as Biphenol A (BPA) and phthalates are toxins that are deleterious to egg quality and fertility. Ways to avoid exposure to these two notorious chemicals along with other potentially harmful substances are clearly listed. In addition to the external toxins, body conditions such as thyroid disorder, vitamin D deficit, or even gum disease can alter fertility. As for supplements, the second third delves into the value of multivitamins, folate, coenzyme Q10, and melatonin along with other antioxidants, and looks at their efficacy, safety, and side effects. However, some supplements advertised to promote fertility, such as royal jelly, L-arginine and pycnogenol, have unproven value.

The final third of the book inspects food intake and the need for a healthy diet, pointing to the Mediterranean diet as being associated with improved fertility. While the egg remains in the woman’s domain, the male must also heed his sperm quality. Chromosome anomalies not only occur in older eggs, but by the age of 35 sperm quality begins its downward slope. For quality sperm production, the male is advised to follow a similar program as advised for the female of taking supplements, avoiding toxins, decreasing alcohol intake, and specifically keeping the sperm forming sites cool and away from the electromagnetic waves emitted by cell phones. By improving egg quality through the procedures clearly detailed and easily replicated, the probability of improved fertility is increased. Not only are the reproductive cells vitalized, but by following these guidelines, overall health is improved.

The technical research data supporting these guidelines are clearly outlined and explained. For couples or individuals thinking of conceiving, and for those who have endured miscarriages, or been labeled with low fertility, this practical rendering of how to improve one’s chances for pregnancy should be required reading.
