Great Showdowns: The Return
From the depth of the internet Great Showdowns has returned with new showdowns. If you don’t know, Scott C. takes some of the most confrontational moments in motion picture history and turns them into cute, funny illustrations. From the last scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark to the boys of the Sandlot facing down The Beast, all with smiley faces. One of the bonus features of this book is a special foreword by Edgar Wright and even a tiny Q and A by Scott C. himself.
Scott C.’s artistry shines on in this second book. Each illustration is as cute (and sometimes disturbing) as the next. It becomes a “guess who” of pop culture references. For example there is a section that is dedicated to classic films like Buster Keaton vs. the clock, or even the main cast from the 1919 film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Yes, some of these are very obscure. I can’t really find a message or deeper meaning to this book. The book is a great conversation starter and a wonderful coffee table book, and that’s about it.
