Gods & Monsters (Serpent & Dove, 3)

Gods & Monsters is the conclusion to the Serpent & Dove trilogy by Shelby Mahurin. Given the much-anticipated showdown with Morgane at the end of book two, I was equal parts curious and skeptical to see how the story would continue.

The book starts rather slowly as the main characters attempt to cope with the loss of several comrades at the end of book two. Lou’s and Coco’s responses to the death of Ansel in particular seemed disproportionate to his level of involvement thus far in the series. Ironically, he plays a larger role in moving the plot along after his death than while he was living.

The first two-thirds of the book had interesting character development and insightful backstory that would have been more impactful earlier in the series. As the group travels around attempting to reestablish their purpose, the reader is treated to several plot twists, fantastical locations, and intriguing new characters. The final third of the book focuses on each character’s ongoing journey with self-awareness and struggle for personal acceptance.

The series ends softly, with not so much a happily ever after but the hope of a better future.
