Everything She Lost
Nina Taylor has been working hard to get her life back on track after a mental breakdown. She’s still struggling with the long-held grief of having lost her brother years ago, and her marriage isn’t perfect, but she’s back with her family and trying to offer stability to her daughters. Meanwhile, her best friend, Deja, has been putting up a front. Deja met Nina after the breakdown, after Deja had started sleeping with Nina’s husband…but she’s cut it off, and now she only has one more ghost from her own troubled past to escape before she’s completely in the clear. But when Deja’s trouble reenters her life, the choices she makes threaten to send Nina into another breakdown.
Everything She Lost is a fascinating novel of friendship, lost love, betrayal, and secrets. Author Alessandra Harris has a flair for suspense, and she weaves a real page-turner that will keep readers up late, eager to find out what happens next. Some plot elements are a bit implausible–the incident that nearly shatters Nina’s mind seems to come completely out of the blue–but overall, the story is interesting and very true to certain aspects of human behavior. A quick read, but one that is very enjoyable.
Chris Hayden has been working at City Book Review since 2012, so that makes him the keeper of knowledge. He manages the office and book reviewers (all 200 of them!), which is no small feat. If you’re looking at the book reviews here, you’re seeing them because he sent the books out for review. Without him, this place would fall apart, because no one else in the office knows how to use the postage machine. Two words: job security.
