Although Lauren Walker encourages everyone to dive into her Energy Medicine Yoga: Amplify the Healing Power of Your Yoga Practice, it seemed to me that it’s for those who already are practicing yoga. Of course, once you pick up the book and read its premise, Walker will have you wanting to start a yoga practice and engage with the energy medicine she’s developed. Walker shares her program so that adopting slight changes to your yoga or meditation practice gives you a way for your body to communicatewith itself. Walker has based the structure of her book on an eight-week class she teaches—to both advanced and beginner yoga students. The eight-week structure works to slowly ramp you up to bring everything together and, later, to deepen your practice.
The system Walker developed is based on the energy systems you may be familiar with, such as the meridians of traditional Chinese treatments. The steps and descriptions are written in a paragraph format, so it is essential to read through the book as one might a textbook. Black-and-white photos illustrate throughout, but I was often hoping for an accompanying video. If you are a yoga instructor, you should check out this book.
