Echoes of Our Origins: Baboons, Humans, and Nature
Echoes of Our Origins gives us some fascinating insight into the research conducted by Professor Shirley Strum over the years on the behavior of baboons. The journey began back in 1972 when the author set out as a young researcher to observe and gain insight into the behaviors of baboons in Kenya. This work covers much of what she discovered over the span of her long career and what she has learned from observing nature and how humans and primates have adapted.
I enjoyed learning about how she coped when her findings were at odds with the scientific frameworks of the day and how she persisted with her work to help us understand just how complex the lives of these animals are and how we can learn from them. The book covers aspects of Professor Strum’s personal life and her numerous adventures in Kenya. All of which make this a fascinating read for anyone interested in primate studies, anthropology, or readers curious about how species adapt and cope within changing environments.
