Cursed: An Anthology of Dark Fairy Tales
Cursed is a fantasy-horror anthology that pulls together more modern takes on old and new fairy tales with a dark twist. English editors Marie O Regan and Paul Kane pull together eighteen tales that get us to think about what we wish for. There are consequences for some in the process of wishing or being cursed. Included are authors new and more established to explore fairy tales that have inspired us in youth and from whom some of us have learned about the world and life. These are usually tales from the dark side.
Some are new takes on traditional fairy tales like Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Troll Bridge and others. Others have been more originally conceived. There are giants in this like Neal Gaiman, Karen Joy Fowler, and Jane Yolen. There are also break out writers that British and Horror fans are more likely familiar with. It was fun revisiting some of these revised fairy tales again. Many stories have fun and starling endings. Not the best read for the sick or infirmed, and maybe youngsters need some parental guidance with this. Fine for those who seek to cultivate still the child within.
