Count on Me
“A little girl is reflecting on how different people see the world and what makes them feel passionate about things. Her father is an artist. It is a real passion for him. Her mother is a scientist and is passionate about her collections of butterflies and bugs. Her brother is a musician. He plays his instrument with great passion. At school, there are a lot of things her friends are passionate about such as dancing and cooking or different kinds of sports. She has tried them all, but her real passion is math. She sees math in everything around her. It shapes her life.
Author and illustrator Miguel Tanco must have a real passion for his work as he has given this little math-passionate girl ways to share her ideas and thinking so other children can feel it’s okay to be passionate about subjects such as math. There is a particularly wonderful copy of her journal at the end of the book that will help explain math concepts and what this little girl sees in everything around her that relates everyday things to math. It’s so nice to see some typical roles reversed in this stellar picture book.
