Camping with the Communists: The Adventures of an American Family in the Soviet Union

These types of personal and shared family memoir books are always a good read, with this one taking readers on a six-week long road trip through Soviet Russia in the 1970s. No matter the story, there is just a piece of magic woven into the writing that simply cannot be found in any other genre. The topics covered in this book are the very same ones that are still occurring with people even thirty years later. From birth we are instilled with a fear of the world outside our own borders and often never realize that people, just like you and me, are out there, with their own stories to be told, their own fears, and while there might be differing lifestyles, we all just want to be loved and accepted.

The Gildens did something most parents never do: they broke down the social barriers and took their child on a life-changing journey that defied the norms and with very little incidence. What they had been told and had read was different from what they experienced, forever changing their lives. This is a book meant to be bought, shared, and shared some more!
