Books Always Everywhere
The subject matter of Books Always Everywhere delivers exactly what you’d expect. Books. Lots and lots of books. Everywhere. While there is no story arc, character development, or dialog, we are shown a charming series of spreads with kids reading (or playing with) books in a variety of settings.
The book’s title was spot-on, but its format caught me a bit by surprise. Twenty-eight 10” by 11” standard thickness pages had me expecting a picture book. But the word count (40) and reading level (1-2 syllable words, 2-4 words per page) gave the feel of a board book. The artwork is lovely, drawn in a light, playful style. The illustrator’s sense of humor shines through with little touches like a cute mouse on every page, and her choice of book titles within the pictures, like monkeys reading The Jungle, or a tall stack of books including Wuthering Heights.
Although the word “book” comprises nearly half the word count, repetition (along with the terrific illustrations) is used effectively to convey contrasting concepts (big vs. small or wide vs. tall). Young readers will surely appreciate the message that books are fun, and can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere.
