A book with a lesson for toddlers from preschool to early grades who want and demand it all. Blue monster wants one thing after another, but as soon as he gets his desire, he is bored and ready to discard the recently acquired acquisition. First he doesn’t like his buggy, then his teddy bear, then his new baby sister, or even his mom and dad. Finally, he gets a new red sports car, a palace, an island, and even his own jumbo jet airplane, but right afterward he feels bored and disappointed until he even dismisses the sun. Without the warmth of the light, little blue monster realizes what he misses is love and friends and family. This is a takeoff of the old fairy tale about the greedy fisherman’s wife who couldn’t be satisfied until she acquired dominion over the heavens and so finally met her downfall. The moral in this engaging whimsical tale is that happiness does not come from possessions but is intrinsic in the warmth of relationships bonded by love. Delightfully illustrated in bold colorful figures with delightful scroungy characters, young readers will lovingly trace the pictures as they read the story.

Chris Hayden

Chris Hayden been working at City Book Review since 2012, so that makes him the keeper of knowledge. He manages the office and book reviewers (all 200 of them!), which is no small feat. If you’re looking at the book reviews here, you’re seeing them because he sent the books out for review. Without him, this place would fall apart, because no one else in the office knows how to use the postage machine. Two words: job security.
