Paul Attaway’s Blood Rivalry is a compelling Southern saga that masterfully weaves together themes of power, family legacy, and the pursuit of redemption. As the third installment in the Atkins Family Country Saga, the novel delves deep into the psychological and social complexities of life in South Carolina, spanning several decades from the post-WWII era to the mid-1990s.

The setting is one of the book’s strongest assets. Attaway vividly captures the atmosphere of Charleston and the surrounding South Carolina Lowcountry. Through the eyes of the protagonist, Walker Atkins, Charleston is described as a “living museum” that is simultaneously “vibrant and alive”. The narrative effectively uses local landmarks—from the historic Tradd Street and White Point Gardens to the Wappoo Country Club—to ground the story in a specific, recognizable reality. The contrast between the polished, high-society world of Charleston legal circles and the gritty, dangerous “swamps” of the Santee River creates a dynamic backdrop for the escalating tension.

The novel’s character work is centered on the internal struggle of Walker Atkins, a successful tax and estate attorney. Walker is a man perpetually living in the shadow of his older brother, Eli, and a traumatic childhood event known as the “Shootout in the Swamps”. Attaway brilliantly portrays Walker’s resentment toward his “defenseless” public image, making him a relatable and deeply human lead.

In stark contrast are the Dunsmores, the novel’s primary antagonists. Led by the patriarch Colin and his son, the arrogant Governor Johnny Dunsmore, the family represents the “old guard” of Southern political power. Their presence provides a sharp critique of political entitlement and the “kingmaker” mentality. Supporting characters like Walker’s wife, Isabelle, provide necessary emotional weight, acting as a grounding force for Walker as he navigates his “three-front war” against the Dunsmores.

The plot is a sophisticated blend of legal thriller and historical drama. It kicks off with Walker attempting to help the Gastons, a couple facing financial ruin due to the predatory “Palmetto Enterprise,” a web of companies Walker suspects is controlled by the Dunsmores. This professional conflict soon becomes personal, reopening old wounds regarding Eli’s mysterious six-year disappearance and the true identity of the serial killer, Rath.

The narrative pacing is excellent, alternating between the present-day legal battle and historical vignettes that explain the roots of the Dunsmores’ power. The search for a long-lost twin brother, Joseph, adds a layer of mystery that propels the final act toward a high-stakes conclusion.

Blood Rivalry is more than just a thriller; it is an exploration of how the past defines us. Attaway’s disdain for the “ugliness” of political maneuvering is palpable, yet he balances this with a genuine love for the Southern landscape and the resilience of family. It is a must-read for fans of Southern Gothic and intricate legal dramas.
